Assertiveness Skills
‘Be assertive’, you are told.
Aggression and passivity, you are told, are not good; rather, you are advised to be assertive.
However, is assertiveness the panacea to all conflict? Is it even the best response to every conflict situation?
Also, what exactly is assertiveness? Does it mean getting your way every time you will it? In our work with our clients, we at CitrusLearning/ Actuate have seen people confusing aggression for assertiveness. The results, in many such cases, have often been disastrous.
In this course, the first of a two-part series on handling conflict situations, the other being “Conversational Intelligence in Navigating Critical Situations” we seek to differentiate between Aggression, Passivity, Assertiveness and Passive-Aggressive Behaviour. We also discuss the situations in which each of these styles represent the appropriate response to conflict. Yes, there are situations where passivity and aggression are the right response to conflict.
This course, comprising eight bite-sized lessons in video and infographic formats, is research-based, but contains simple, practical inputs for you to follow.
Each lesson, and the accompanying assessment, will require you to set aside ten to fifteen minutes, every three days, to complete.
