Your supervisor has just walked up to your desk with a task that has an end-of-day deadline. However, you are terribly busy working on an assignment that you know is far more urgent and important. In this scenario you should-
- a. Accept the task (it’s your supervisor, after all!), try and do what you can and see how it all works out (Although you know from experience that this approach will hamper both the tasks)
- b. Imply that the mounting work pressure is approaching harassment levels. Then subtly threaten to escalate to HR. (That’ll fix the supervisor nicely!)
- c. Acknowledge the importance of the new task. Then state your refusal clearly, reminding them politely that you’re currently on a project that ranks much higher on the priority list. And show willingness to explore alternatives on how best to get the job done on time.
