How to Deal with Distracted Audience Members

a. Ignore these distracted audience members. They’ll get the point sooner or later. And if they continue, the remaining people in the audience will certainly put them in place.

b. Pull up the distracted audience members in full view of everyone else, and ask them to share the joke or whatever they were discussing with the class. They’ll get the message. If they persist, however, ask them to be quiet or leave the room. That will stop them in their tracks.

c. Politely at first, and then firmly if they persist, ask the distracted audience members to stop being a distraction to others. If they continue being a nuisance, ask them to step outside the classroom with you. Once outside, inform them politely and firmly that they are distracting others who are interested. You could offer to let them leave if these distracted audience members have no interest in staying on.

d. Stop talking and keep silent until the offending distracted audience members quiet down. Do this whenever a sidebar conversation comes up among audience members during the presentation.
