The Link Between Exercise and Productivity

In the previous lesson, we saw the link between sleep and productivity.

In this lesson, we will explore the link between exercise and productivity.

A study conducted by Jim McKenna, a sports professor at the Leeds Metropolitan University in England, revealed that on the days they used the company gym, 65% of employees had better colleague interaction, managed time well, met deadlines, felt better about work, and felt less stressed!

This means that there is a direct correlation between regular physical activity, improved workplace productivity and enhanced well-being.

But exactly how does this happen? Let us find out…

How Exercise Powers the Brain

A study conducted by Dr Scott Small revealed that a three-month exercise regimen  can increase blood flow to the part of your brain focused on memory and learning by 30%.

And when your brain works better, your ability to work better naturally improves, thereby improving productivity.

What kind of exercise can enhance brainpower?

In his book – The Real Happy Pill: Power up Your Brain by Moving Your Body –
Psychiatrist Dr Anders Hansen has identified different exercise routines to improve various cognitive skills related to personal productivity and execution excellence.

  1. Cardio, an antidote to stress and anxiety, should be practised 2 to 3 times weekly, for between 30 to 40 minutes per session
  1. Running for about 30 to 40 minutes every morning can improve mood, concentration and creativity
  1. Practising Walking, Light Jogging and Weight Training – in that order – over a few months can improve memory

In this lesson, we saw the link between exercise, productivity and execution excellence.

In the next lesson, we will explore the link between diet and productivity.

Before moving on to the next lesson, though, please take the accompanying quiz.
