The Link Between Exercise and Productivity
In the previous lesson, we saw the link between sleep and productivity.
In this lesson, we will explore the link between exercise and productivity.
A study conducted by Jim McKenna, a sports professor at the Leeds Metropolitan University in England, revealed that on the days they used the company gym, 65% of employees had better colleague interaction, managed time well, met deadlines, felt better about work, and felt less stressed!
This means that there is a direct correlation between regular physical activity, improved workplace productivity and enhanced well-being.
But exactly how does this happen? Let us find out…
How Exercise Powers the Brain
A study conducted by Dr Scott Small revealed that a three-month exercise regimen can increase blood flow to the part of your brain focused on memory and learning by 30%.
And when your brain works better, your ability to work better naturally improves, thereby improving productivity.
What kind of exercise can enhance brainpower?
In his book – The Real Happy Pill: Power up Your Brain by Moving Your Body –
Psychiatrist Dr Anders Hansen has identified different exercise routines to improve various cognitive skills related to personal productivity and execution excellence.
- Cardio, an antidote to stress and anxiety, should be practised 2 to 3 times weekly, for between 30 to 40 minutes per session
- Running for about 30 to 40 minutes every morning can improve mood, concentration and creativity
- Practising Walking, Light Jogging and Weight Training – in that order – over a few months can improve memory
