08. The Craftsman Mindset

a. Interact with people outside of your own domain or function. Expose yourself to what your colleagues in other departments concern themselves with. Gain detailed information into their processes, structures, strategies and business challenges.

b. Identify if there is anything more that you can learn about your department or process. Know every protocol related to your department from end-to-end. Understand how sub-processes in their function interconnect to create the desired output.

c. Have an understanding and appreciation of the entire business at large and the way that it operates.

d. Understand how the technology that undergirds your domain is structured. For example, if you are in finance, learn as much as you can about the structure of your accounting software.

e. Benchmark your department against those within organisations that are industry leaders.

f. Ensure complete customer delight. And that requires having a deep understanding of what the customer and the customer’s customer seeks
