6. Phases of a Negotiation – VI

Thus far, over the course of five lessons, we’ve looked at maintaining mutual respect as a pre-cursor to conflict resolution conversations, as well as four conversation markers, namely:

a) Create a safe, respectful environment conducive to mutual dialogue

b) Agree on Goals (The Big Picture)

c) Clarify interests

d) Adopt a ‘You & Me Vs. The Problem’ attitude

No matter how noble your intentions though, and no matter how well you navigate through these four markers, chances are that the conversation will at some time turn antagonistic, since your respective interests are – by default – at loggerheads, given it’s a conflict situation.
